With the advent of different drugs for anti-VEGF-therapy, such as Avastin and Lucentis for age related macular degeneration the discussion on the use of drugs outside the licensed label has gained renewed interest.
Although the majority of drugs especially in paediatric or oncology specialties are used “off-label”, the “off-label use” was rarely mentioned in ophthalmology. Also, health care insurer did not really care about the use of “off-label”medications in instances such as the intravitreal use of antibiotics in endophthalmitis, which is “off-label”.
In Germany the “Bundessozialgericht” has defined the options for “off-label” use of drugs: According to its decision of April 4, 2006,“off-label” use is possible as an exception in an individual situation, in case of a severe disease entity and if chances for improvement are to be expected.
The aim of this round table discussion is to evaluate the situation of “off-label”-medications in ophthalmology in different regions of Europe and to find solutions for our daily practice in ophthalmology. |
