The symposium deals with a selected group of tear film proteins and peptides which lately have attracted major attention in various organs. At the ocular surface, however, little up to no knowledge exists about these substances. It becomes more and more obvious that they are not only directed against potentially harmful substances but also function as a mediator between the innate and aquired immune system. They are essential for tear film composition and are involved in wound healing processes thus offering a great therapeutical potential for the treatment of ocular surface disorders.
