A three-months-Fellowship of the International Federation of Ophthalmological Societies (IFOS) was initiated by the International Council of Ophthalmology (ICO) in 2001. The aim is to support promising young ophthalmologists from developing countries to improve their practical skills in a clearly outlined sub-field of Ophthalmology. Almost one hundred of the best Departments of Ophthalmology all over the world could be won to take IFOS/ICO-Fellows according to the rules of IFOS/ICO. Until July 2007 267 fellows were awarded. This presentation intends to give a report on the evaluation procedure of the candidates, on the origin of the fellows, were they were trained, on the experience the fellows and the hosting departments made, on highlights and drawbacks and on the financial situation of the project. Suggestions for improvements will also be made.
