Objective: An FDA study on the implantation of the diffractive apodised multifocal lens AcrySof® ReSTOR® (Alcon Pharma Ltd.) for the correction of bilateral cataract yielded highly promising results in view of distance and near visual acuity, decrease in patient spectacle dependence, and patient satisfaction.
Methods: 100 patients who received a multifocal ReSTOR® IOL for the correction of bilateral cataract were included in this retrospective study. One month postoperatively, uncorrected and best-corrected near (UCNVA, BCNVA) and distance visual acuity (UCDVA, far BCDVA) was determined and possible complications were assessed.
Results: 85 % of all patients achieved UCVA of ³0,5, 53% achieved UCVA of ³0,8 and 31% UCVA of ³1,0. BCVA of ³1,0 was also achieved by 85% of all patients. UCNVA was ³0,5 in 88% of all patients, ³0,8 in 59%, and ³1,0 in 34%. All patients had a best-corrected near visual acuity of ³0,5, 97% had BCNVA of ³0,8, and 88% BCNVA of ³1,0.
Conclusions: Implantation of the ReSTOR® intraocular lens makes it possible to effectively correct far and distance VA after lens extraction.
