Objective: The object of the present study was to test stereo vision of patients with idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension.
Methods: Beside the ophthalmological examinations (visual acuity, refraction, intraocular pressure, slit lamp and fundus examination) the stereo vision was tested by Titmus-, TNO- and Visual-test. Statistical analysis was performed with the Mann-Whitney-U-Test.
Results: Seventeen patients (m:f=2:15, average age+=52±11 years) with idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension were included and compared with seventeen age-related controls (m:f=7:10). Ophthalmological examinations in all subjects were without pathological findings. Statistical analysis showed significant differences in the Titmus-test (p=0.009), TNO-test (p=0.043) and Visual-test (p=0.022).
Conclusions: The idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension as a systemic vascular diseases is probably associated with a disturbed microcirculation in the visual cortex which could be responsible for the dysfunction of stereo vision. This has to be taken into account in stereo vision testing of ocular diseases.
