AbstractFR.19.02 Indications for penetrating and lamellar keratoplasty in Oman El-Gayar S.1,2, Bialasiewicz A. A.2, Al-Fadhil N.1, Sabt B. S.1 1Department of Ophthalmology and School of Ophthalmic Technicians, College of Medicine and Health Sciences, Sultan Qaboos University, Muscat, Oman; 2University Eye Hospital Regensburg, Germany Objective: To review indications for penetrating and lamellar keratoplasty in Oman Methods: Evaluation of a retrospective case series of 140 patients scheduled for keratoplasty Results: 140 patients (69 male, 71 female) ranging at 20 - 60 years (10x <20 years, 8x 20-40 years, 64x 40-60 years, 58x >60 years). Retrievable visual acuity ranged from light perception to better than 0.1 (10x LP, 29x HM, 28x FC, 30x ≤0.1, 29x >0.1, 2x unknown). Indications for pKP were: advanced keratoconus 9%, traumatic corneal scarring 4%, infections 4%, others 11%, and for lamellar pKP: trachomatous scarring 72%. 18 patients <40 years presented with advanced keratoconus (44%), infections (17%), trauma (17%) and others scars (22%). Patients above the age of 40 years predominantly had trachoma (84%), few keratoconus (3%) and some undefined corneal scarring (13%). Thus, 109/140 patients (78%) were legally blind (VA <0.1/WHO definition), and 31 (22%) suffered from low vision (VA 0.1-0.3/ WHO definition). Conclusions: This evaluation shows three main indications for keratoplasty in Oman: lamellar KP for trachomatous scarring in the old age group >40 years, pKP for keratoconus and infections in the young patients.
