Objective: To assess the regular morphology of the femtosecond laser flap in LASIK patients with optical coherence tomography.
Methods: 15 LASIK flaps created with the IntraLase femtosecond laser (FSL) were imaged one day after LASIK by anterior segment optical coherence tomography (Visante, Carl Zeiss Meditec). Direct measurement of the flap was performed centrally and at 20 measuring points of the horizontal and vertical cross-section.
Results: The intended flap thickness was 100 µm and flap diameter was 8.5 mm. The measured central flap thickness was 105.5±8.6µm and diameter was 8.47±0.3mm. Flap morphology of the FSL flap varied little over the 21 measuring points with a mean thickness of 113.3±10.0µm. The flap thickness at 3mm was medial 120.5±17.2µm, temporal 116.4±14.0µm, superior 126.8±12.4µm and inferior 115.9±6.8µm.
Conclusions: The FSL creates a consistent flap with a mean thickness of 113.3µm and small variation of 92% of this value at the center and 105% at 3mm zone.
