Abstract

SO.11.01

The role of Avastin today and in the future

Eter N.
Department of Ophthalmology, University of Bonn

Off-label use of intravitreal Avastin (Bevacizumab) has become a widespread treatment for neovascular AMD and other ophthalmic diseases associated with macular edema or neovascularisation. Ever since the first intravitreal application of Avastin was reported in August 2005, the use of this medication in the field of ophthalmology has increased exponential. Several case series demonstrated not only an antiproliferative effect, but also reported an improvement in visual acuity. Right from the beginning legal concern emerged regarding the off-label use, an issue that becomes even more important now that Macugen and Lucentis are approved. In cases of AMD this may also lead to reimbursement discrepancies. The presentation provides an overview of the latest treatment results in comparison to other anti-VEGF therapies, and reflects medico-legal and socio-economic aspects.
