Current dry eye diagnostics

Schirra F., Seitz B.
Eye Infirmary, Saarland University Hospital, Homburg/Saar

Objective: Presentation of current dry eye diagnostics. Routes of both, efficient, quick and accurate diagnosing and significance of new, rather center based procedures shall be presented.
Methods: Review of up-to-date knowledge considering also the results of the Dry Eye Work Shop (DEWS)
Results: A suitable sequence and combination of patient questionnaires, medical history exploration, clinical findings, and few standard clinical tests ensures safe classification of the dry eye subtypes. Application of newer, specialized diagnostic procedures in dry eye centers allows further evaluation and assessment of complex pathologies of the functional unit of tear film and ocular surface.
Conclusions: There is beneficial impact of using new methods and re-evaluating standard procedures for diagnosing dry eye in either setting, an ophthalmologic office as well as dry eye centers.
