Aurel of Szily 1886-1945, oculist and scientist – honoured and discriminated

Brückner M.1, Dammann E.2
1Studentin der Psychologie, CAU Kiel; 2Fachärztin für Kinderheilkunde und Jugendmedizin, Münster
Presenter: Dr. E. Dammann

Objective: On the occasion of his 125th birthday on June 1st 2005 it should be remembered to one of the most well-known oculist of the first half of the twentiest century.
Results: The importancs of Aurel of Szily as scientist as well as doctor reached far the borders of Germany. His biography shows the consequent development of an outstanding personality and talents, which at the peak of its career was deprived of all professional as well as personal perspectives by the National Socialists. It is the desire of this contribution to remember this outstanding oculist and to start further scientific as well as medicalhistorical research; especially since the process concerning the fact that important parts of his biggist and most important work, the “monographie of papilla nervi optici” was obvously used by others for their own advantage, or not heard of again, have not been cleared up by today.
Conclusions: Aurel of Szily is not only a warning example for the story of having been turned out as Jewish highschool-professors and doctors by the National Socialists, but reminds us also to the inconsequent handling of the successors in profession and society with these fates.
