Genetic, acquired, iatrogenic factors and systemic diseases can induce hyperhomocysteinemia that is correlated to higher risk of cardiovascular diseases (aterosclerosis and trombosys, JAMA 1997), dementia/Alzheimer (NEnglJMed 2002), headache and eye diseases: as collateral causative or worsening of diabetic retinopathy (mainly proliferative, Eye 2004), central or branch retinal vein and artery occlusion (Ophthalmology 2004), anterior ischemic optic neuropathy, AMD (AJO 2004), lens (homocystinuria), PEX-capsular glaucoma (EurJOphthalmol 2006, JNeuralTransm 2007). Our epidemiological case series studies show an high correlation between retinal vein occlusion, hyperhomocysteinemia, folate deficit in Inflammatory Bowel Disease (Crohn disease/ulcerative rectocolitis) and in PEX-capsular glaucoma.
