AbstractP 077 Functional results and secondary cataract development of a hydrophilic acrylic intraocular lens with enhanced optic edge design three years after implantation Rabsilber T. M., Nishi Y., Sanchez M. J., Limberger I. J., Ehmer A., Auffarth G. U. University of Heidelberg, Department of Ophthalmology Objective: One hydrophilic acrylic intraocular lens (IOL) with enhanced 360° sharp optic edge design (Rayner C-flex) was evaluated three years postoperatively to investigate functional results and development of secondary cataract in comparison to the former Centerflex IOL. Methods: In a prospective clinical setting, a C-flex IOL was implanted in one eye of 42 patients (mean age: 71.5±8.2 years). Besides functional results, retroilluminated photographs were evaluated 6, 12, 24 and 36 months after surgery using the EPCO analysis program and compared to a matched group of Centerflex patients. Results: One month postoperatively, mean best corrected distance visual acuity increased from 0.22±0.23 [logMAR] to 0.08±0.12 [logMAR]. Three years after implantation, slightly decreasing interim results were noted: 0.16±0.28 [logMAR] (n=25). Within three postoperative years, the C-flex IOLs showed less secondary cataract development compared to the Centerflex group. Conclusions: The enhanced 360° sharp optic edge design reduced posterior capsule opacification in the long-term follow-up by preventing lens epithelial cell migration along the optic-haptic junctions.
