Objective: Adamantiades-Behçet´s disease (ABD) is a multi-system disorder with recurrent oral and/or genital ulcerations, skin lesions and ocular involvement. Aetiology still remains unclear.
Methods: Retrospective case series of 140 patients (63 females, 77 males) with ABD, treated in the department of ophthalmology in the years between 1983 and 2006.
Results: The mean follow up was 6.3 years (0.5-22 years). The mean age at the first manifestation was 23 years, the full disease was noted at 32 years. The mean age at time of eye involvement was 30 years. Most of the patients were of Turkish origin (n=73) or from Germany (n=34) and from Lebanon (n=8). 56% of the patients developed eye involvement. In 9% of the patients eye involvement was the first manifestation, in 20% of the patients the second manifestation. Iridocyclitis was the first eye manifestation in 40% of the patients, in 8% a retinal vasculitis developed. A hypopyon was only found in 1% of the cases.
Conclusions: More than the half of the patients developed eye involvement. Only 10% of the patients had eye involvement as first sign but 20% of the patients showed eye involvement as the second manifestation.
