Objective: Tamoxifen is a non-steroidal antioestrogen used in the treatment of selected patients with breast carcinoma. Rarely, it has been shown to cause ocular toxic effects including cristalline retinopathy.
Methods: Retrospective analysis of clinical and functional (visual acuity, visual field, colour vision, ERG) data of 8 female patients under tamoxifen therapy.
Results: 7 of 8 patients complained a decrease in visual acuity. In one case fundus examination showed crystalline retinal deposits in the macular area, another one revealed white spots. 3 patients showed conspicuous changes in panel D-15 colour-test, in 3 cases a pathological ERG was discovered.
Conclusions: Tamoxifen-induced ocular side effects are observed rarely. In unclear cases of visual loss tamoxifen retinopathy should be included in the differential diagnosis.
