Objective: We examined a girl with a loss of vision to sc=0,2 to 0,3 and an "uncertain finding of the posterior pole" on the right eye. Half a year before there was a vision of sc = 1,0 and a normal fundus.
Methods: We performed a clinical examination of the eye and diagnosed a pigmented tumour and a pigmented pucker on the posterior pole. For histological diagnosis we performed vitrectomy and biopsy of the finding.
Results: Histological examination showed an epiretinal hamartoma of the retinal pigment epithelium without any signs of malignancy. In the postoperative course there was an inconspicuous fundus, a normal macular structure in the OCT. We observed on follow-up increased vision to sc=0,6p with normal stereoscopic vision.
Conclusions: Epiretinal hamartoma of the retinal pigment epithelium of the child is a rare diagnosis. Because of the clinically uncertain finding and the loss of vision an operation and biopsy was necessary to secure the diagnosis and induce visual recovery.
