Abstract

Casuistry: squamouscell carcinoma of the “clean” cornea

Sivkova N.
Department of Ophthalmology, Medical University Plovdiv

Objective: To report our experience in patients with squamouscell carcinoma of the cornea.
Methods: In the period between January 1985 and December 2006 two female patients with squamouscell carcinoma of the cornea were treated in the Department of Ophthalmology, Medical University Plovdiv. The histology proved that the tumor cells infiltrated the cornea alone. The conjunctiva and limbus were not involved. Lamellar keratectomy after frozen section control was performed combined with brachytherapy with 90-Strontium in general dose 120 Gy (single daily dose 10 Gy).
Results: Two months after the treatment the cornea became flatten without neovascularization. During the follow-up there were no rubeosis of the iris, secondary glaucoma or any evidence of tumor recurrence. There were no regional or far metastases.
Conclusions: The squamouscell carcinoma of the cornea without involvement of the conjunctiva is a rare tumor. The suggested therapy provides gut anatomical and functional results.
