Visual field progression

Heijl A.

EGS’ goal for glaucoma management is to prevent loss of quality of life at an affordable cost (economically, psychologically et cetera). Only through progression can a glaucoma patient go from no or mild disease to advanced disease where he will suffer visual impairment and loss of quality of life. Glaucoma is chronic and life-long and if properly followed for a long enough time most glaucoma patients will show progression.
Key factors for risk of visual impairment and loss of quality of life are:
1. The amount of visual damage at diagnosis
2. The rate-of-progression of the disease
3. Life expectancy.
These three factors are also those factors, that need to be in the centre of glaucoma management.
This presentation will describe current methods to determine visual function progression and rate-of-progression in glaucoma, and will illustrate how this very easily can be translated into clinical management, with the goal of preventing visual disability and loss of quality of life.
