What does a bifocal IOL accomplish in the intermediate range?

Kaymak H., Ott G., Mester U.
Augenklinik der Bundesknappschaft Sulzbach/Saar

Objective: Multifocal lenes have two focal points so the critical zone with this bifocal lenses is the intermediate range.
Methods: In prospective study 30 patients received the Acrysof Restor in both eyes. The visual acuity was measured at different distances (40, 50, 60, and 400cm) moncularly and binocularly. The target refraction was 0,2±0,1. The depth of field was obtained by spectacle defocus (+2 to -5 D) in 0.5 steps. Pupil size was measured with the Colvard pupillometer under near and distance fixation. Subjects outcomes were assessed by questionnaire.
Results: The mean age of the patients was 72±6 years. The mean implanted lens power was 21,6±2,3 diopters. The spherical equivalent was 0.08±0.27 (-0.25 to 0.66). The uncorrected binocular mean visual acuity have a mean amount 0.83 (40cm), 0.8 (50cm) and 0.63 (60cm) with a mean pupil diameter of 2.9 mm.The defocus curve showed a bifocal profil with a mean visual acuity of 0.6 with -1.5 defocus. The peudoaccomodation range was 5.5 diopters. 91% of the patients were satisfied with their intermediate vision.
Conclusions: For most of the patients the intermediate vision was sufficient with the Restor MIOL.
