Objective: To evaluate the effects of intravitreal bevacizumab (Avastin) for macular oedema in different cases on visual acuity (VA), optic coherence tomography (OCT) and fluorescein angiography (FA).
Methods: The data of 55 consecutive patients who have been treated with intravitreal Avastin since August 2006 are presented. We assessed the best corrected VA and performed OCT and FA before and after treatment. Continued treatments were included at 2 or more injections.
Results: 55 eyes (48x AMD, 3x myopic MP, 2x thrombosis, 2x diabetic RP) were included. 32 treatments were continued. 16 therapies were discontinued after stabilisation of retinal thickness. The median of injections was 2.5 (SD=1.08), therapy could be terminated after 1 to 4 injections. 22 cases had detachments of the retinal pigment epithelium without a negative influence on therapy outcome. A tear of the retinal pigment epithelium was observed in 2 cases. VA, retinal thickness reduction and leakage reduction were highly significant (p<0.0001).
Conclusions: Intravitreal Avastin reduces retinal oedema and leakage and helps improving visual acuity. In many cases termination of treatment seems possible after less than 5 injections. Duration and long-term results need to be further evaluated.
