1700 children and young adults suffering from cancer in Germany annually, 500 of these die. The orbit is a rare localization and account for about 8% of all cases of malignant tumors in childhood.
Rhabdomyosarcoma is the most common primary malignancy of childhood with annually 60 new patients in Germany. Secondary orbital malignancies are most common metastases due to neuroblastoma or hematological diseases.
Diagnostics and therapeutic procedures are interdisciplinary including imaging and incisional biopsy to provide the diagnosis. The treatment of primary and secondary orbital malignancies is performed by treatment optimizing studies, including surgery, multiagent chemotherapy with or without irradiation.
The multimodal strategies, results, and ophthalmologist 's role are shown by the disease courses in this rare condition.
The ophthalmologist is involved in diagnosis and staging as well as monitoring response to treatment of both the primary disease and secondary ophthalmic complications.
