AbstractSO.11.05 Assessing immediate effects of Lucentis® (ranibizumab) administered in conjunction with photodynamic therapy with Visudyne® in patients with choroidal neovascularization secondary to age-related macular degeneration Wolf-Schnurrbusch U. E. K., Brinkmann C. K., Berger L., Wolf S. Klinik und Poliklinik für Augenheilkunde, Inselspital, Bern, Schweiz Objective: The purpose of this prospective 4 months clinical trial was to quantify the short-term effects of the same-day administration of photodynamic therapy (PDT) with Visudyne® and a intravitreal injection of ranibizumab on choroidal neovascularisations (CNV) due to age-related macular degeneration (ARMD). We evaluate short-term effects on ETDRS-visual acuity (VA) as well as central retinal thickness (CRT) measured by Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT). Methods: All patients underwent a combination therapy with PDT and same-day intravitreal injection of ranibizumab at baseline (BL). Afterwards ranibizumab injections were administered at day 30, day 60, and day 90. Examinations included best corrected visual acuity (VA), complete ophthalmic examination, OCT and fluorescein angiography (FA). Changes in VA and central retinal thickness measured in OCT were analysed between baseline and last follow-up. Results: Fifteen patients (4m, 11f) aged from 54-94 years (mean 75.5±11.7 years) with occult (73%) or predominatly classic (27%) CNV were included into the study. Follow-up ranges from 1 - 4 months. VA showed significant increase from baseline to last visit (log MARBL: 0.61±0.22; (57±9 letter) vs. log MARlast: 0.4±0.26; (68±19 letter); p<0.01). We observed no moderate or severe loss of visual acuity during follow-up. In FA no evidence of a leaking CNV was detected at last follow-up. Central retinal thickness showed significant reduction from baseline to last follow-up. (OCTBL: 322±63 µm vs. OCTlast: 200±43 µm; p<0.01). Conclusions: Our results demonstrate a short-term benefit for VA and central retinal thickness after administration of photodynamic therapy (PDT) with Visudyne® and same-day intravitreal injection of ranibizumab followed by subsequent 3 ranibizumab injections in monthly intervals.
