Ophthalmological success in areas of conflict

Hopkins A. D.
Centre de Formation Ophtalmologique d'Afrique Centrale (CFOAC), Kinshasa

War has been a feature of Central Africa over the last few decades. The only countries not to have had major instability are Gabon and Cameroon. Although Cameroun did prepare a national Plan for Blindness Prevention and was one of the first countries to sign up to Vision 2020 developments have been slow. Gabon has yet to finalise a National Plan. Most other countries in the region have developed National Plans. Although not all have been signed, activities have already begun in many countries and there are already considerable advances in Cataract Surgical Rates (CSR), Onchocerciasis control and in some cases more specialised Paediatric and Low Vision services. Studies of cataract Surgical Rates, Onchocerciasis Control, Trachoma Control, specialised services, as well as Human Resources Development and Infrastructure show a gradual improvement in eye care delivery although much remains to be done to achieve targets by 2020.
