Abstract

How LASIK and epi-LASIK started and continued

Pallikaris I. G.
Heraklion/GR

The rapid evolution of refractive surgery initially starts with Photorefractive Keratoplasty (PRK) which was approved by Food and Drug Administration on 1995. Due to the limiations of PRK such as patients’ pain, slow visual recovery and corneal haze/regression, the procedure had not gain general acceptance from doctors and patients. In 1991, Pallikaris et al published the first results of a new technique named LASIK. Since then, several improvements in the technique have been made. Recently, a new refractive procedure, called Epi-LASIK has been found by Pallikaris. This technique combines the advantages of LASIK and surfaces ablations.
