AbstractFR.23.07 Dry eye syndrome following femtosecond laser-in-situ-keratomileusis: effect of hinge position and flap thickness on corneal sensitivity and the eyes micromorphology Kohnen T.1,2, Strenger A.1, Kern T.1 1Department of Ophthalmology, Johann Wolfgang Goethe-University, Frankfurt am Main, Germany; 2Cullen Eye Institute, Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, USA A prospective study for the evaluation of the occurrence of the dry eye syndrome after LASIK with the femtosecond laser is set us to investigate the influence of hinge position and flap thickness on corneal sensitivity and the eyes micromorphology. The authors want to find out at which flap thickness and hinge position the tear film is affected least and which thickness and hinge position allows for faster corneal regeneration. Flap thickness (100 or 120 µm) as well as hinge position (superior-temporal, superior, superior-nasal, nasal) were randomised for the right and the left eye. Five examinations are planned; the last one at six months postoperatively. Analysis of corneal sensitivity is performed with a Cochet-Bonnet aesthesiometer (Luneau) centrally, nasally, inferiorly, temporally, and superiorly. Schirmer II test is used for determining the basic reaction, tear break-up time is measured by fluorescein and slitlamp with a blue light filter. A confocal microscope (CS4, Nidek) is used to examine histological structures and processes inside the cornea (micromorphology). Subjective evaluation of the degree of the dry eye syndrome is done by using the Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI), which is a valid and reliable instrument for evaluating severity of dry eye syndrome. It was developed by the research group of Allergan inc. (Irvine, California) and consists of 12 questions on the occurrence of the dry eye and its effect on visual acuity as well as on patient satisfaction. The type of LASIK treatment used is approved for Germany and is CE-certified. The femtosecond is used to cur the corneal flap. It makes horizontal, vertical, as well as diagonal separation of tissue possible.
