AbstractFR.19.04 Cataract surgery at Takeo Province, Cambodia Mörchen M., Ang C., Mao N., Sarin S. Takeo Eye Hospital, Cambodia Objective: Cataract is the most frequent cause of blindness in developing countries. In Cambodia cataract-surgeries are performed only for the last 10 years. So far little information is available regarding cataract surgery outcome. Methods: We conducted a follow-up study at Takeo Eye Hospital, Cambodia, from August to December 2006 of 459 cataract-patients. Conventional ECCE or manual sutureless cataract-surgery were performed. VA was assessed at discharge and 1-3 months later. Patients with traumatic cataract were excluded. Results: The distance VA preoperatively was poor (< 6\60) in 79,7%. 25,3% had additional ocular pathology. A PC-IOL was implanted in 99,3%. Posterior capsule rent occured in 6,5%. At discharge VA was 6\18 or better in 37,9%, 17,2% had a VA of < than 6\60. 31,8% presented for follow-up. 66,4% had a best-corrected VA of 6\18 or better (VA was less than 6\60 in 10,3%). Conclusions: Due to the fact that no ophthalmologist could be trained in Cambodia for decades as a result of civil war these preliminary results are encouraging. Attention should be paid to the high percentage of patients with additional ocular pathology and the low number of patients presenting for follow-up examinations.
