Toric intraocular lenses after perforating keratoplasty

Hueber A.
Zentrum für Augenheilkunde, Klinikum der Universität Köln, Köln

Objective: Patients after perforating keratoplasty sometimes suffer from substantial astigmatism. When cataract surgery is planned, the use of a toric intraocular lens is an option.
Methods: Retrospectively 6 eyes of 5 patients after perforating keratoplasty were examined for visual acuity and astigmatism after implantation of a toric intraocular lens.
Results: In all cases an improved visual acuity and a reduced astigmatism were found. The average value of astigmatism was reduced from 7,25±2.00 to 2,25±1.50 dioptre. Because of partial irregular astigmatism or the occurrence of a macula oedema in one case the improvement in visual acuity was only limited.
Conclusions: The use of toric intraocular lenses can help to reduce the astigmatism after perforating keratoplasty and improve the visual acuity.
