Examinations of molar fatty acid- and albumin concentration in the blood as parameter for cataractogenesis

Objective: An influence of the proportion of the molecular concentration of free fatty acids and the concentration of albumin in the culture medium, on lens epithelium damage could be proven by preceding animal-test-studies. It was assumed a cataractogen effect.
An aim of this study is to verify the expressiveness of this assumption on the human in regard to the cataractogenesis.
Methods: As possible factors of risk for the occurrence of damages of the lens epithelium and a cataract development are to be examined and verfied the molecular concentrations of free fatty acids and of albumin in the blood and the quotient resulting from it. In a prospective study 102 probands were consecutively included.
Investigation criteria:
- record of the concentration of free fatty acids as well as of albumin in the blood
- classification of the cataract (Scheimpflug camera)
- slit-lamp microscopic investigation, classification of the cataract: according localization and degree of opacification (WHO simplified cataract grading system)
Main test criteria:
- Quotient of the molecular concentration of free fatty acids and albumin in the blood
Results: In the research it was determined a linear coherency between the quotient of the molecular concentration of free fatty acids and albumin and the extent of lens opacity with patients of the age of 60 and older (p<0,05). The linear regression of the concentration of free fatty acids in the blood and the densitometry of the lens was significant for all patients with p<0,05.
Conclusions: A direct connection between the concentration of free fatty acids in the blood as well as the increased quotient of the molecular concentration of free fatty acids and albumin in the blood, and the existence of cataract can be assumed.
