AbstractDO.17.05 What is the role of Excimer laser in the treatment of keratoconus? Sekundo W. Department of Ophthalmology, Gutenberg University of Mainz Objective: To evaluate, whether it is true that keratoconus is a classical contraindication for excimer laser treatment. Methods: We searched PubMed for keratoconus and Excimer laser as well as PTK, PRK, LasEk and Lasik. We also critically reviewed our cases, who underwent PTK for subepithelial contact lens induced scars in keratoconus. Results: According to the literature keratoconus is associated with complication when Lasik has been performed. In contrast, there is some evidence of satisfactory results after surface ablation leading to an improvement of visual acuity or contact lens tolerance in up to 70%. A combination of cross-linking and excimer laser surface ablation is a new modality described. Removal of subepithelial scars by PTK has shown satisfactory results in our patients. Conclusions: In case of an absolute contact lens intolerance and non-satisfactory results by cross-linking alone or in combination with ICRS, an excimer laser surface ablation might prove to be a way to postpone corneal grafting. However, the potential indications are limited and the treatment is not yet scientifically accepted.
